Why Choose Women's BJJ Classes at Legacy Pasadena?

Women make up a rapidly growing segment of the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu community, and Legacy Pasadena is committed to fostering an inclusive, supportive environment where female students can excel. Our women's BJJ classes in Pasadena feature:

  • Female and male instructors with extensive competition and teaching experience

  • Flexible scheduling that fits your lifestyle
  • Peer mentorship from experienced female role models

What to Expect in Women's BJJ Classes

Fundamentals Class

Perfect for beginners, our fundamentals women's BJJ classes focus on core techniques, safety, and building a solid foundation. You'll learn basic positions (mount, guard, side control), escapes, and fundamental submissions in a progressive manner. No experience necessary—many of our students started with zero BJJ background.

All-Levels Class

Ideal for students with prior experience, these women's BJJ classes combine technique drills with live rolling (sparring). You'll refine your skills, explore advanced transitions, and develop your personal style under expert guidance.

Open Mat Sessions

These unstructured training times allow you to practice with training partners, work on techniques you're learning, and get individualized feedback from instructors. Open mat is where our community bonds and celebrates each other's progress.

Meet Our Women's BJJ Instructors

Our instructors bring years of competitive experience, patience, and a genuine passion for developing the next generation of female grapplers. Several of our instructors are women who understand the unique journey of entering and progressing through BJJ as a female athlete.

Coach Maria Reyes (Women's Fundamentals)

  • Purple Belt with 8 years of BJJ experience
  • Former collegiate athlete, specializing in beginner instruction
  • Believes every woman deserves to feel strong and capable

Coach James Thompson (Women's All-Levels)

  • Brown Belt, 15+ years BJJ experience
  • Competed at national and international levels
  • Dedicated to technical precision and competitive development

All our instructors maintain a respectful, encouraging approach that celebrates effort over ego.

Frequently Asked Questions About Women's BJJ Classes

Do I need any experience to join women's BJJ classes in Pasadena?

Absolutely not. Our fundamentals classes are designed for complete beginners. You'll learn everything from day one.

Will I get hurt in BJJ?

BJJ is a grappling art, not striking, which significantly reduces injury risk. We emphasize tap-outs, controlled drilling, and partner respect. Safety is our top priority.

What should I wear to my first class?

Wear comfortable workout clothes to your first class—shorts and a t-shirt are fine. Once you decide to continue, you'll need a BJJ gi (uniform), which we can help you select.

Can I train in women's-only classes if I'm not competitive?

Yes! Our women's BJJ classes serve recreational students, fitness enthusiasts, and serious competitors equally. You set your own goals.

What's the age range in women's classes?

Our women's classes include students ranging from their 20s to their 60s. We celebrate the diversity and encourage all ages to train together.
